SIBU: Kumpulan Sibu D’Tari (KSD) will organise two competitions, sponsored by Sibu Member of Parliament, Oscar Ling Chai Yew, to celebrate the upcoming National Day.

The events will be held during the National Day Countdown Night on August 30, from 8:00 pm to 11:00 pm at the Taman Harmoni car park here.

According to KSD’s press release on Thursday, the competitions include a secondary school-level Iban Traditional Music (Betaboh) and Dance (Ngajat) Competition, as well as a primary school-level Patriotic and Eco-Friendly Costume Showcase.

Registration for both competitions is now open to all secondary school students residing in Sibu.

“Participating teams must consist of at least one dancer – either solo or group – and a music team of up to four members playing traditional Iban instruments. Each team will be given up to five minutes to present their performance.

“The competition is limited to the first 10 teams that successfully register. Interested schools may scan the QR code on the promotional poster to access the competition guidelines and registration form,” it said.

“Teachers in charge may also scan the QR code to join a dedicated WhatsApp group for updates and further information.

“The registration deadline is August 21. Schools may send more than one team to participate, as long as team members are not repeated across teams.”

Participating teams are required to arrive at least 30 minutes before the event begins.

Prizes will be awarded to the top three winners, who will receive certificates, trophies, and cash prizes of RM1,200, RM900, and RM700 respectively. Consolation prizes in the form of hampers will also be presented.

Meanwhile, the ‘Patriotic and Eco-Friendly Costume Showcase’ is open to all primary school students residing in Sibu, with participation capped at 25 students.

Participants are required to design and model a costume inspired by Malaysian culture and unity.

At least 70 per cent of the costume must be made from recyclable or eco-friendly materials.

Each participant will have two minutes to freely present their costume during the showcase. Prizes will be awarded to the top five winners.

The first-place winner will receive a certificate, a trophy, and RM300 in cash; second place will receive RM250; third, RM200; fourth, RM150; and fifth, RM100.

All participants will receive certificates of participation, and several consolation hampers will also be given out.

The organisers hoped that through these competitions, students will not only gain a deeper appreciation of traditional cultural heritage but also develop a sense of pride and love for it.

“They also aim to create a positive impact on society by raising awareness about the importance of preserving and developing the cultural arts of Sarawak.

“It is with great hope that students from all schools in Sibu will actively participate, and that the local community will come together to attend and enjoy the performances in support of our young talents,” the press release added.
