SIBU: Some 1,500 saplings of various native tree species will be planted in Sibu Golf Club as part of the Greening Sarawak campaign.

As a start, a total of 15 saplings were planted in a brief ceremony here today (Feb 19) which was officiated by the Deputy Minister of Natural Resources, Environment, and Climate Change Datuk Seri Huang Tiong Sii.

The remaining saplings will be planted in stages throughout the 108 hectares of golf course.

Meanwhile, Sibu Golf Club management committee captain Wong Lay Nam commended the Sarawak Forest Department for taking the initiative to provide the club 1,500 saplings.

“Sibu Golf Club is the only golf course in this central region. I believe that by planting the 1,500 saplings of diverse species on our golf course, it would eventually make the course greener and more aesthetically pleasing,” he said.

The Greening Sarawak tree planting campaign is in line with the Greening Malaysia Programme, which targets planting 100 million trees from 2021 to 2025.

From the 100 million trees, Sarawak, through its Forest Department, will plant 35 million in five years, and to date, more than 21 million trees have been planted throughout the state since the programme was launched in 2021.

Also present were deputy director of the Forest Department of Sarawak Happysupina Sait and Sibu Golf Club management committee deputy president Andy Hii Siik Kiong.
