SIBU: Minister for Tourism, Arts and Culture Datuk Seri Tiong King Sing has called on the organisers of the Sibu International Powerboat Race (SIPBR) 2025 to intensify efforts to attract more international participants to the event.
The Dudong assemblyman commended the organisers for successfully drawing about 262 boats to compete across eight categories, including entries from neighbouring Brunei.
“Events like this are highly beneficial, not only in boosting the local economy but also in promoting tourism.

“I hope greater emphasis will be placed on international promotions to draw more participants from abroad,” he said during his speech at the event held at the Li Hua Waterfront today.
He added that the responsibility of promoting the event should not rest solely with the organisers, but requires the cooperation of all parties to effectively reach out to international participants.
Meanwhile, on whether any upgrades are planned for the Li Hua waterfront which deemed suitable for hosting international watersports events, Tiong said a proposal should first be submitted.
“The relevant agencies should come forward with a design and proposal outlining the required upgrades. This should be approved by the Sarawak government before being submitted to the Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture (MOTAC) for consideration,” he said.
He added that once that process is complete than a discussion on the feasibility of the project can be held.
“We will, of course, do our best to support it, as it is our responsibility to provide the necessary facilities and infrastructure for the people,” he said.
