SIBU: Residents of Sibu Jaya are expected to have a more reliable water supply by the end of this year once ongoing pipe upgrading works are completed.
Sarawak Water Sdn Bhd representative Siew Kok Kiong said work was currently underway to install a larger main pipe capable of supplying sufficient water to Sibu Jaya.
“We hope that by the end of this year, the water supply problem will be resolved. We are installing a 900-millimetre main pipe, which will increase the water supply capacity from the current 10 million litres a day to 13 million litres,” he said.
He was speaking at a dialogue organised by the Progressive Democratic Party (PDP) Dudong branch today.
The dialogue was held to highlight water supply issues faced by residents in Sibu Jaya and Durin, particularly during the current dry season.
PDP Dudong chief Teo Boon Siew chaired the dialogue at the Sibu Division Resident Office.
According to Siew, the situation in Sibu Jaya was improving, with only residents living on the second and third floors of flats still experiencing occasional water shortages, particularly during peak hours.
For Sibu district, he said the expected completion of Phase Three of the Salim Water Treatment Plant by the end of this year would increase water production from the current 225 million litres a day to 275 million litres.
“Next year, we will also upgrade Phases One and Two, which will supply an additional 75 million litres of water.
“Water production is now only 165 million litres a day from the Salim and Bukit Lima treatment plants,” he added.
As for Durin, he said Sarawak Water would carry out pipe replacement works next year.
He also said consumers could contact the company’s hotline at 1300-88-2020 for water supply-related issues.
