SIBU: The Sarawak Government’s decision to provide a one-off RM700 incentive for private media practitioners has been welcomed as an important acknowledgement of the industry’s role in ensuring credible and responsible journalism.
The announcement, made by Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg, has been described by the Sibu Journalists Association (SJA) as a meaningful gesture that highlights the state’s appreciation of the media’s contribution to public communication and nation-building.
In its statement, SJA said the incentive recognises the daily challenges faced by journalists and their efforts to provide accurate, balanced and ethical reporting for communities across Sarawak.
“This announcement clearly reflects the government’s recognition of the media’s role in delivering accurate, balanced, and responsible information to the public,” SJA Chairperson, Florence Nervyn, said in the statement on Facebook.
She said the initiative serves not only as financial support but also as a morale booster for private media workers navigating an increasingly demanding media landscape.
“This initiative not only provides motivation to journalists, but also acknowledges their significant contribution towards strengthening the media landscape in Sarawak,” she added.
Florence added that SJA is prepared to work closely with the state government and relevant agencies to ensure that the distribution is implemented smoothly and reaches all eligible recipients.
“We stand ready to cooperate with the state government to ensure the distribution of this incentive is carried out efficiently, systematically, and reaches all eligible recipients,” she stressed.
She also expressed appreciation for the state’s continued commitment to supporting media practitioners.
“SJA greatly appreciates the state government’s continuous support for media practitioners, and we will continue to play an active role in strengthening the media industry, keeping it professional, filled with integrity, and competitive,” she added.
