SIBU: Deputy Minister of Public Health, Housing, and Local Government Datuk Michael Tiang Ming Tee has commended the Sibu Life Care Society (SLCS) for recognising and appreciating its women members.

He said that being a woman in the 21st century is not easy, as they have to balance their careers and family responsibilities.

“They have to take care of their job to please their boss. When they go back home, they have to cook, take care of their families, husbands, children, and themselves.

“And then, (women in SLCS) use their free time to participate in the association. They even take the extra step to donate blood,” he said at the SLCS dinner in conjunction with the Women’s Day celebration at a restaurant here last night (Mar 8).

Tiang, who is also the Pelawan assemblyman, noted that women are just as capable as men, citing historical examples like Mulan from ancient Chinese stories.

“Women have equal power, equal rights, and equal ability. It’s not a new concept—it has always been that way.

“So, I want to encourage our ladies tonight: You may look small, but your vision must be big. You may be very soft, but your spirit can be tough and strong.

“Women are not the moon that depends on light from the sun. They are shining bodies themselves. They can shine, achieve glory, and accomplish wonderful results on their own,” he added.

On SLCS’s blood donation efforts, Tiang stressed that donating blood to Sibu Hospital is crucial, as the hospital serves the entire Central Zone.

“I know our blood bank even supplies blood to the whole of Sarawak, and sometimes even all the way to Sabah.

“So, I really admire the association’s heroic act. Thank you for your contribution, your actions, and your generosity,” he added.

A total of 21 female members received certificates of appreciation for their active participation in blood donation, with Lee Mee Lay (69 donations), Wong Chiew Siang (68 donations), and Lee Mee King (50 donations) leading the list.
