SIBU: The Lions Club of Sibu Pahlawan (LCSP) and the Lions Club of Shenzhen Da Tong (LCSDT), China, officially sealed a landmark twinning partnership on Thursday evening, strengthening international cooperation and reaffirming a shared commitment to humanitarian service under Lions Clubs International.
The twinning ceremony, witnessed by Lions leaders, Past District Governors, Cabinet Officers, club presidents and members from Malaysia and China, was held during a welcoming dinner hosted by Lions International District 308-A2 Governor, Datuk Jimmy Tie Hien Hwa, at a prominent hotel here.
LCSP President, Boston Ho Teck Howe, signed on behalf of LCSP whereas LCSDT was represented by its Charter President, Yu Qian.
Describing the occasion as “a significant milestone in international Lionism”, Tie said the partnership represented far more than the exchange of a certificate.
“It is the beginning of a lasting friendship founded on trust, mutual respect and a common commitment to serving humanity. This evening marks the start of a new chapter that will bring our two clubs closer together through fellowship, leadership and meaningful service,” he said.
Under the twinning agreement, both clubs pledged to strengthen cooperation through joint community service projects, leadership exchanges, youth programmes, cultural interaction and regular reciprocal visits, while advancing the humanitarian objectives of Lions Clubs International.
Tie said although Lions members come from different countries, cultures and languages, they are united by one enduring mission.
“Regardless of where we come from, we share one heart, one spirit and one mission – we serve,” he said.
He expressed confidence that the partnership would evolve into a vibrant and enduring alliance, creating opportunities for collaboration that would benefit communities in both Malaysia and China.
Drawing inspiration from Sarawak’s extensive river network, he likened the new alliance to a bridge of friendship connecting Sibu and Shenzhen, bringing together not only two Lions clubs but also two cultures and two nations through the spirit of volunteerism.
The District Governor also highlighted the alignment between Lions Clubs International President’s 2025-2026 theme, ‘Rooted in Service’, and District 308-A2’s theme, ‘Build Your Stars – Light the Way for Others’.
“When service is deeply rooted, friendship flourishes. When friendship grows stronger, our clubs become stronger. Together, we can illuminate more lives and extend our reach to those most in need,” he said.
Guests at the welcoming dinner were treated to Sarawak’s celebrated empurau fish, regarded as one of the world’s finest freshwater delicacies.
Tie described the dish as a symbol of Sibu’s hospitality and goodwill, expressing hope that the evening would leave every guest with unforgettable memories and a lasting appreciation of Sarawak’s warmth.
He also thanked the visiting delegation from LCSDT for choosing LCSP as its sister club, describing the partnership as a testament to the enduring values of friendship, cooperation and service that transcend national borders.
He further conveyed his appreciation to the organising committee, Lions leaders, members and volunteers whose dedication ensured the success of the welcoming dinner and twinning ceremony.
The evening concluded with the formal exchange of the twinning certificate, symbolising a long-term partnership committed to expanding humanitarian initiatives, promoting cultural understanding and strengthening international fellowship within the global Lions movement.
The twinning between LCSP and LCSDT is expected to serve as a platform for future collaborative service projects, leadership development and people-to-people exchanges, further reinforcing the Lions motto, ‘We Serve’, while advancing District 308-A2’s vision of ‘Build Your Stars – Light the Way for Others’.
