SIBU: This town is set to become an important arena for the development of the country’s digital economy when it hosts the National E-Commerce & Digital Economy Conference 2025 which will be held at RH Hotel here on November 8 and 9.
The prestigious conference organised by Persatuan Pengamal Digital Multimedia Sibu (PPDMS) is expected to bring together more than 500 participants, including entrepreneurs, e-commerce industry players, government agencies, academics, investors and content creators from all over the country.
According to the organising chairman, Clement Tiong, the conference aims to empower local small and medium enterprises (SMEs), especially traditional businesses here to be more prepared to undertake digital transformation and be competitive in the global market.
“We want to help traditional businesses adapt digital models through e-commerce platforms and new technologies. Through this conference, they will be able to explore borderless market opportunities and increase their competitiveness,” he told a press conference here on Thursday.
Clement, who is also PPDMS’ secretary, said the conference will also focus on strengthening collaboration between industry players, technology providers, government agencies and the business sector, in addition to exploring global trends such as cross-border trade, social e-commerce, artificial intelligence (AI)-based innovation, and smart logistics.
“The two-day conference will feature a distinguished line-up of speakers, including Head of Digital Technology Division, Sarawak Multimedia Authority (SMA), Hemlet Kiai; Marketing Manager, Sarawak Trade and Tourism Office in Singapore (STATOS), Richard Lau Lee Siong; and Deputy Dean, School of Business and Management, University of Technology Sarawak (UTS), Dr Rahmat Aidil Djubair.
“Also scheduled to appear are representatives from Sarawak Digital Economy Corporation (SDEC) who will share government incentives and programmes to support digital enterprises, as well as industry figures such as Ophelia Lim from Just Order Today, Malcolm Lee from Yoututor Academy, and popular content creator Kakak Saga,” he said.
Clement said advocate of the High Court in Sarawak, Boston Ho Teck Howe, is also expected to present on topics related to brand protection and legal issues in e-commerce, including copyright, trademarks, counterfeit goods and intellectual infringement.
PPDMS President. John Tiong, who was also present, said the event is a strategic move to make Sibu one of the main hubs for digital economy development in Malaysia, in line with Sarawak’s aspirations towards a high-tech economy.
“The conference is not just a knowledge-sharing platform, rather, a strategic networking arena that will connect local entrepreneurs with industry experts and international opportunities.
“We want to see more young talents and small businesses from Sibu soar to the national and global levels,” he said.
In addition to the keynote session, he explained, the conference also offers a two-day workshop series covering both theoretical and practical approaches.
The workshop, he said, will cover various aspects including setting up an e-commerce system, digital payment integration, short video production and editing, and branding strategies on social media.
“More interestingly, the event also features an Innovation Showcase that brings together leading technology companies to introduce the latest solutions in the fields of e-commerce, digital payments, AI and content creation tools,” John added.
The conference offers three categories of participation fees to ensure access to all levels of society.
Student Pass is offered at RM50, Early Bird Pass is RM80 until October 31, while Standard Pass is priced at RM120 starting Nov 1.
