Sibu RC Powerboat Challenge aims for MBOR spot

SIBU: The 2025 Sibu International RC Powerboat River Challenge is set to break a national record with 750 participants racing from July 24 to 27 at the Pulau Li Hua waterfront here.

The event aims to surpass the Malaysia Book of Records (MBOR) entry set in 2017 with 614 racers.

DTTG secretary Maria Nadja Jimmy said the competition draws teams from Malaysia, Brunei, and Thailand, with top categories being Class H (140 boats) and Class F (113 boats).

“This second edition will break the previous record set by the Sibu Municipal Council (SMC) in 2017 with 614 participants,” she said at a press conference in the Resident Office here on Monday (July 21).

Themed ‘D’ Mighty Rajang River Roars, Again!’, she said the event is backed by a RM100,000 grant from the Ministry of Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts (MTCP) and support from various local agencies.

According to Maria, the entire technical aspect of the competition was handled by the professional AB Racing Team and involved nine categories including Class A + B, Class H, Class F, Class G and the veteran Class 55ers category.

The champion of each category will take home cash prizes of up to RM3,000 in addition to special awards such as Champion of the Best and Spirit of Racing.

Side events such as a colouring competition, a powerboat innovation creative waste competition, lucky draws as well as the sale of food and official race merchandise were also held to attract visitors.

“A free shuttle service is provided every 30 minutes from the Pulau Li Hua Commercial Centre to the event site as a convenience to the public,” said Maria.

The opening ceremony is scheduled to take place on July 24 at 9.30 am while the closing and presentation of MBOR certificates will take place on July 27.
