SIBU: The town will mark the start of Sarawak’s powerboat racing calendar this year with the Sibu International Powerboat Race 2025 (SIPBR2025), set to take place from Apr 25 to 27 at Waterfront Pulau Li Hua.
According to Sibu Resident Abang Mohamad Porkan Abang Budiman, the programme is organised by the Resident’s Office under the Divisional Tourism Task Group (DTTG) Sibu, and will see participation from both local racers and those from Brunei Darussalam.
“Although this year, some of our regular participants from other countries such as Thailand or Indonesia could not join us due to scheduling conflicts, we remain committed to being the opening host for the powerboat events across Sarawak,” he said during a press conference here, today.
Theme ‘D’Awakening of The Mighty Rajang River’, the event symbolises a revival of the once-quiet Rajang River, now brought to life with the roaring engines of high-speed boats and an atmosphere filled with adrenaline.
A total of 262 participants will compete in the race across eight categories, namely 5HP Open Hull (30 participants), 18HP & Below Tunnel Boat (55), 18HP & Below Long Boat (17), 30HP 2 Cylinder Tunnel Boat (65), 30HP 3 Cylinder Tunnel Boat (40), Formula 5 (50HP) Tunnel Boat (38), Formula 4 (45SST) (4), and Formula 3 (SST60) (13).
He added that organisers will provide three free shuttle buses throughout the event, operating every 15 minutes to ensure smooth traffic flow and visitor comfort.
“We advise visitors to park at Li Hua Commercial Centre and take the shuttle buses provided, as access to the event area will be limited. Only vehicles with special passes will be allowed to enter the venue,” he said.
Visitors can also look forward to various side activities, including a children’s colouring contest, Zumba Ria Bersama Komuniti, lucky draw sessions, food and beverage stalls, and more to enliven the event atmosphere.
Abang Mohamad stressed that the race is not merely a water sports competition but a platform for community integration, a tourism driver, and a local economic booster.
“SIPBR2025 opens the door for Sibu to be recognised as a high-calibre water sports destination, not only at the national level but also internationally.
“It promises excitement, entertainment and opportunities for all — whether you are a participant, visitor, industry player or part of the local community.
“It is a symbol of unity and our shared aspiration to celebrate the grandeur of the Rajang River through an event that is dynamic and vibrant,” he said.
He was confident that with the strong support of the organisers, strategic partners, government agencies and the local community, SIPBR2025 will be a meaningful and impactful event with the potential to become an annual tradition for Sibu.
He called on the public to come forward and lend their support to the race.
