SIBU: Melinda Wong Kwong Hung, Malaysia Commissioner For Oaths, has passed the Professional Translator PPM-DBP (Persatuan Penterjemah Malaysia – Dewan Bahasa Dan Pustaka).
She received the certificate of competency from DBP director-general Dr Hazami Jahari during a ceremony in Kuala Lumpur recently, witnessed by PPM president Dr Hasuria Che Omar.
Wong is qualified to undertake certified translations recognised by the government under the relevant Ministry such as the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (KLN), Ministry of Home Affairs (KDN), Ministry of International Trade and Industry (MITI), Ministry of Finance, Ministry of Health, Ministry of Human Resources, Embassies and Missions abroad and others.
“Certified translations are necessary for official use such as for migration, study abroad, study permit applications, work permit applications, visa applications, MM2H (Malaysia My Second Home) applications and others.
“Examples of translations that need to be certified as legal are Birth Certificate, Marriage/Divorce Certificate, Academic Result, Police Report, Adoption Certificate, Immigration Document, Legal Document and others.

Touching on PPM or MTA (The Malaysian Translators Association), Wong stated that PPM is a professional body established under DBP, a statutory body under the Malaysian Ministry of Education.
Since 2017, PPM has been a member of the World Federation of Translators or better known as FIT, a global organisation, she said.
FIT is also an organisation that has Unesco (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation) consultative agency status.
“The acronym FIT comes from the organisation’s French, namely the International Federation of Translators. Currently, FIT is headquartered in Paris.
“PPM has also been elected as a Council Member of APTIF (Asia Pacific Translators and Interpreters Forum) which is the FIT branch for the Asia Pacific region,” Wong explained.
