KUCHING: Siemens Energy has strengthened its commitment to advancing clean energy in Sarawak by offering the supply of two gas turbines, each with a capacity of 500 megawatts (MW), for an energy project in Samalaju.

According to Siemens Energy’s Managing Director, Thorbjorn Fors, the company has a strong interest in collaborating to advance Sarawak’s hydrogen economy, including accelerating the production and use of hydrogen, as well as strengthening the skills of the local workforce.

He said the company is also committed to partnering with universities and educational institutions in Sarawak to provide training and development opportunities for local students.

“We are committed to working with universities and other institutions in Sarawak to share our knowledge and bring students to Siemens Energy for training in the future,” Fors said.

He said this when met by reporters after a courtesy visit to the Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg at Wisma Bapa Malaysia here today.

Siemens Energy also highlighted Sarawak’s significant potential in the clean energy sector, given its abundant natural resources such as hydro, oil and gas.

The company sees Sarawak as a key player in the ASEAN energy grid and a producer of clean energy molecules like ammonia and gas.

With the offer of two high-capacity gas turbines for the Samalaju project, Siemens Energy hopes to take the next step in realising the project, which is also part of a broader programme discussed with Abang Johari.

The collaboration is also aligned with Sarawak’s aspirations to become the ASEAN green energy hub by 2035, with targets to increase electricity capacity to 10 gigawatts (GW) by 2030 and 15GW by 2035.

Through projects like HYFLEXPOWER, Siemens Energy has demonstrated its gas turbines’ capability to operate with 100 per cent hydrogen, making it an ideal strategic partner in Sarawak’s pursuit of clean and sustainable energy goals.
