KUCHING: The Sarawak International Festival of Music and Arts (SIFMA) 2025 returns this December with an expanded line-up, broader regional participation and new artistic elements as Sarawak strengthens its creative and performing arts scene.
Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts Minister Datuk Seri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah said the sixth edition reflects the state’s long-term commitment to nurturing local talent ahead of the upcoming Centre for Performing Arts.
“We have been supporting creative and performing arts activities, both locally and overseas.
“By the time the Centre for Performing Arts is ready, Sarawak will have a strong pool of capable performers and artisans,” he said during a press conference at the State Legislative Assembly (DUN) complex here on Friday.
SIFMA 2025 organiser, chief executive officer of International Music House (IMH) Dr Geraldine Law-Lee said the festival will extend beyond Kuching to Sibu, Bintulu and Miri, featuring performers from across Sarawak.
She said that a new Fashion Elegance segment will feature designers from Hong Kong, Indonesia, Peninsular Malaysia and other countries, alongside Sarawakian designers, sculptors and visual artists.
“SIFMA will grow not only through its main shows but also via a full build-up starting with Junior SIFMA on Dec 2, giving young talents a platform to develop their skills.
“The Night of Classics on Dec 3 allows performers another opportunity to showcase their talents before the Grand SIFMA on Dec 5 and 6,” she said.
Geraldine further explained that four sessions will cater to special needs communities, with the Music Heals Programme highlighting the role of music in supporting teenagers with emotional challenges and elderly individuals with dementia or Alzheimer’s.
“This edition positions SIFMA as a full-spectrum arts festival, integrating music, dance, visual arts, sculpture and fashion,” she said.
The festival is structured into two thematic halves: “Sarawak to the World” and “World to Sarawak,” blending regional and international music, fashion and artistic expression. Entrance to all shows is free.
“After five years, it’s time to give back to the community. All Sarawakians are welcome to come,” she added.
