KUCHING: Sarawak is making significant headway in developing its integrated sewerage management system through a series of strategic projects aimed at improving public health and environmental protection in major towns.

Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian said that since its commissioning in 2017, the Kuching Centralised Wastewater Management System Zone 1, Package A, has connected 103,076 population equivalent (PE) or about 3,089 premises in Satok, Jalan Ajibah Abol, the city centre, Padungan and Petanak.

“The system has treated 33.44 million cubic metres of domestic wastewater.

“For the Miri Centralised Sewerage System Phase 1, completed last year, a total of 29,494 PE involving 721 premises in the city centre, including SABERKAS, Boulevard, Waterfront, Wireless Walk and Jalan Marbau have been connected,” he said when speaking at the Sarawak Sewerage Services Department (JPPS) dinner here on Tuesday night.

Dr Sim, who is also Minister of Public Health, Housing and Local Government, added that JPPS has completed two septage treatment plants in Miri and Sibu at a total cost of RM40 million.

“Since 2011, the Miri plant has treated 273,192 cubic metres of septage, while the Sibu plant has treated 287,621 cubic metres. These efforts safeguard public health and preserve the environment,” he stressed.

He also said by year-end, the RM750-million Kuching Centralised Wastewater Management Package 2 is expected to be fully completed, benefitting about 4,000 premises in Kubah Ria, Pinang Jawa, Laruh Scheme, Heritage Garden, and key buildings such as Normah Medical Centre, the Baitulmakmur Building and Wisma Bapa Malaysia.

“This marks another milestone in Sarawak’s infrastructure that will enhance the people’s quality of life,” he said.

Meanwhile, Dr. Sim stated that JPPS is also planning and designing several other strategic projects worth RM1.653 billion, including Kuching Centralised Wastewater Management System Zone 1, Package 3 (±3,000 houses), Miri Centralised Sewerage System Phase 2 (±4,200 premises), Samarahan Centralised Sewerage System Phase 1 (±3,000 houses), and the rationalisation of the Bintulu Sewerage System.

“These achievements reflect the state government’s commitment to delivering sustainable, modern sewerage services for the well-being of Sarawakians,” he said.
