MIRI: A training centre for silat has officially opened its doors at a new permanent location within the Miri Stadium complex, providing a dedicated space for silat exponents to hone their skills.

Sarawak Sports Corporation (SSC) chief executive officer Awang Putrayusrie Awang Reduan, who is also the director of the Sarawak State Sports Council (MSNS), stated that the new facility marks a significant step forward for silat development in the region.

“Previously, we had to rent premises at a cost of RM2,000 per month,” Awang Putrayusrie explained. “With this new centre, managed jointly by SSC and MSNS, we can eliminate rental costs while offering athletes a well-equipped training environment.”

The centre features three dedicated silat training spaces and benefits from its proximity to other sports facilities within the stadium complex, including tracks for athletics, weightlifting and archery.

Facilities for karate are also set to be introduced in the near future, contributing to the government’s broader goal of centralising sports infrastructure for ease of access and efficiency.

Awang Putrayusrie emphasised the importance of such facilities in supporting the development of silat and other sports in Sarawak, aligning with the state government’s mission to ‘popularise’ sports and foster a more active community.

“This centralised approach ensures that athletes have access to world-class facilities, and it allows SSC and MSNS to closely monitor their progress.

“It also reflects the government’s commitment to enhancing sports infrastructure for the benefit of the local community,” he added on Tuesday (Dec 24) when met at the opening of the centre.
