KOTA KINABALU: Sabah is set to become a key energy hub in Southeast Asia with the launch of an RM8.88 billion oil and gas project at the Sipitang Oil and Gas Industrial Park (SOGIP).
Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor said the project, a collaboration between Sabah Oil and Gas Development Corporation (SOGDC) and Gibson Shipbrokers Ltd, will drive investment, innovation, and job creation in the sector.
The two-phase development includes a state-of-the-art port for energy transport and trade.
Hajiji emphasised SOGIP’s role in securing a stable supply of natural gas and lower-carbon fuels, aiding Malaysia’s transition to renewables like solar and wind.
With backing from the private sector and government, he said the hub will strengthen energy infrastructure and technology, reinforcing Sabah’s economic resilience and energy independence.
To boost local participation, the Sabah Local Content Council, established last May under SMJ Energy, will require stakeholders to invest in training programmes for Sabahans.
“As Malaysia strengthens its global energy presence, SOGIP will be key to sustainable industrial growth,” Hajiji said. – BERNAMA
