Six arrested in cockfighting raid

MERADONG: Police swooped in on an illegal cockfighting session and arrested six local men at an open field area along Jalan Tanjung Manis/Sibu here.

The suspects were detained during a raid carried out around 2.05 pm yesterday by a team from the Criminal Investigation Division of the Meradong district police headquarters.

District police chief DSP Tansli Mering said
several items used during the fights, including live and dead roosters, a weighing scale and a whiteboard, were seized.

“The suspects and seized items were taken to Bintangor Police Station for further investigation,” he said in a statement.

The case is being investigated under Section 73(1)(g) of the Public Health Veterinary Ordinance 1999, which, upon conviction, may result in offenders facing a fine of up to RM2,000, imprisonment of up to six months, or both.

Meanwhile, police advised the public to stay away from all forms of illegal gambling, and to report any suspicious or criminal activities in their areas to assist police efforts in combating such crimes.
