Six months behind bars for contraband offence

SIBU: A 34-year-old man will spend the next six months in prison for failing to pay a RM100,000 fine for possession of contraband goods.

Magistrate Mohd Syukri Mokhtar had on Tuesday (June 28) handed Nornikman Sidek the fine in default six months’ imprisonment for the offence.

He also ordered him to pay duties amounting to RM12,600 within two weeks failing which he has to serve four months in prison.

He was charged with being in possession of contraband goods comprising 325 cartons of beer valued at RM13,105.

According to Customs Department prosecuting officer, James Ho, the contraband was found during an inspection on a container at about 12.50pm on July 3, 2019.

Nornikman admitted that the goods belonged to him.
