Six months’ jail for meth possession

KUCHING: The Magistrates’ Court here today sentenced a 53-year-old man to six months’ imprisonment for possessing 0.17 grams of methamphetamine.

Magistrate Mason Jaro Lenya Barayan imposed the sentence on Jemi Jap after he pleaded guilty to the charge read before the court.

The court ordered the jail term to run from the date of his arrest on Oct 13, 2025.

Jemi was charged under Section 12(2) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, which is punishable under Section 12(3) of the same Act.

Upon conviction, the offence carries a penalty of a fine not exceeding RM100,000 or imprisonment for a term of up to five years, or both.

According to the facts of the case, Jemi was arrested during an Ops Tapis Khas roadside operation at the Taman Arbi flats in Tabuan Jaya at about 10.40 am.

A police officer approached and identified himself before conducting a body search on the accused.

The inspection led to the discovery of a transparent plastic packet containing crystalline substances suspected to be methamphetamine.

Jemi was immediately arrested, and the seized item was later sent to the Department of Chemistry Malaysia for analysis.

Laboratory results confirmed that the substance was methamphetamine weighing 0.17 grams.

The prosecution was conducted by Deputy Public Prosecutor Muhammad Aidil Akmal Sharidan. Jemi was unrepresented.
