KOTA SAMARAHAN: Six academic subjects taught at Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (Unimas) have received recognition from The Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings by Subjects.
Unimas Vice-Chancellor, Professor Datuk Dr Kadim Suaidi, said the recognition which was announced on Oct 26, indicated a significant improvement from the previous year’s listing.
Dr Kadim said the subjects of Engineering, Business and Economics, Life Sciences, Social Sciences, Clinical and Health, and Computer Science earned the recognition.
Furthermore, he said that Clinical and Health, as well as Computer Science, are new additions to this year’s list, with Unimas ranking among the top 800-1000 in the world.
He also noted remarkable improvements in existing subjects, such as Engineering, which now ranks between 800-100, compared to its previous ranking of 1000+.
“Likewise, the subjects of Business and Economics have moved up to the 501-600 category globally, compared to their previous ranking in the 601-800 range. Additionally, the Social Sciences subject is now positioned in the 601-800 category, an improvement from its previous standing in the 801+ category.
“For Life Sciences, its position has consistently remained in the 801-1000 range, maintaining the high standards established in the previous year.
“Indeed, this recognition demonstrates Unimas’ commitment to enhancing excellence in teaching and learning, research and innovation, and producing quality graduates in line with international industry standards.
“On this occasion, I extend my congratulations to the Unimas community, who have combined their efforts and expertise to achieve this remarkable accomplishment.
“This success indirectly serves as an inspiration and determination for all academic staff, support personnel, and students to continue striving for success and driving Unimas toward higher goals,” he said at the Unimas 27th Convocation Ceremony held at DeTAR Putra on Monday (Nov 6).
Dr Kadim also stressed the university’s efforts to ensure the employability of Unimas graduates, aligning with the aspirations of the Sarawak state government in developing highly competitive and skilled local graduates.
“Therefore, the annual intake of students into the university has been increased. This demonstrates its strong commitment and role in assisting young individuals to succeed and achieve their dreams,” he added.
The 27th Convocation Ceremony of Unimas, taking place from Nov 6-9, will witness 3,897 graduates receiving their respective degrees at various academic levels, including Doctor of Philosophy, Master’s, and Bachelor’s degrees.
The ceremony was graced by Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg, who is also the Pro-Chancellor of Unimas, during the first session of the ceremony.
The first session included the conferment of degrees, with 544 postgraduate graduates, consisting of 64 Doctor of Philosophy graduates, 455 Master’s graduates, and 25 recipients of the Postgraduate Diploma in Higher Education Teaching and Learning, awarded to academic staff.
The ceremony also saw the first batch of graduates of the Bachelor of Arts in Global Communication from the Faculty of Education, Language, and Communication, and the Bachelor of Arts in Creative Arts with Honours (Animation) from the Faculty of Applied and Creative Arts, receive their scrolls.
