KUCHING: A local man was sentenced to six years and six months in prison by the Sessions Court here for possessing 34.85 grams (g) of methamphetamine in March last year.

Mahadhir Madon, 52, pleaded guilty to a charge read by the court interpreter before Judge Iris Awen Jon.

According to the charge, Mahadhir was charged under Section 12(2) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 and punishable under Section 39A(2) of the same Act for possessing 34.85g of methamphetamine.

If convicted, he could face life imprisonment or a minimum of five years in jail and up to ten strokes of the cane.

He committed the offence at the roadside of Kampung Serikin here at around 10.50 am on March 28, 2024.

According to the case facts, on the day of the incident, a police officer and his team were conducting ‘Op Tapis’ at the roadside of Kampung Serikin when they stopped a suspicious-looking luxury compact vehicle.

Upon inspecting a bag belonging to the detained man, they found a cream bread plastic wrapper containing two transparent plastic packets filled with crystalline substances, suspected to be methamphetamine.

The accused was immediately arrested, and the seized items were sent to the Department of Chemistry Malaysia for analysis.

Investigations confirmed that the report from the department verified the substance as methamphetamine, weighing 34.85g.

As a result, the accused was found guilty of possessing the illegal substance.

The prosecution was led by Deputy Public Prosecutor Mohamad Aiman Mutallib Muhamad Shariff, while the accused was unrepresented.
