SIBU: SJKC Kiang Hin here marked another milestone on the road to its upcoming 100th anniversary by holding its 2026 Annual Sports Day on Friday, bringing together students, parents, teachers and community leaders in a vibrant celebration of sportsmanship, unity and holistic education.
Held at the Tun Zaidi Sports Stadium here, the event drew the participation of 232 students competing under four houses — Red, Yellow, Blue and Green — in a full-day programme designed to nurture physical excellence while instilling discipline, resilience and teamwork.
Speaking at the ceremony, SJKC Kiang Hin Board of Managment chairman, Kapitan So Teck Kee, said the annual sporting event is far more than a contest for medals, describing it as an important platform for character-building and personal development.
He commended the school’s administration, teachers and staff for their commitment in ensuring the success of the event, adding that the collective effort reflected the school’s dedication to providing students with a balanced education.
Sports cultivate perseverance, courage, cooperation and mutual respect, he said, stressing that the true value of competition lies not in victory or defeat, but in the discipline, determination and sportsmanship demonstrated throughout the games.
One of the highlights of this year’s Sports Day was the introduction of a 60-metre sprint for Primary One and Primary Two students, giving the youngest students their first opportunity to compete on the athletics track.
So said the event was specially arranged to encourage children to build self-confidence, develop a sense of belonging and experience the excitement of healthy competition from an early age.
According to him, the competition also serves as a talent identification platform, with top-performing athletes expected to earn the opportunity to represent the school at next year’s inter-school athletics meet.
The school also presented its Best Male Athlete and Best Female Athlete awards to recognise students who displayed exceptional performance, determination and exemplary sportsmanship throughout the competition.
Addressing the students, So encouraged them to embrace every event with confidence while upholding the spirit of fair play and mutual respect.
He reminded them that every race, jump and throw represented an opportunity to challenge themselves and grow, urging them to embody the principle of “Friendship First, Competition Second.”
The Sports Day forms part of a series of activities leading up to SJKC Kiang Hin’s centenary celebrations, reflecting the school’s enduring commitment to nurturing well-rounded students who excel academically, physically and morally while preserving its proud educational legacy.
The ceremony was graced by Deputy Minister of Public Health, Housing and Local Government Datuk Michael Tiang who was represented by his special assistant, Boston Ho as guest of honour. Also in attendance was SJKC Kiang Hin headmaster, Ling Ing Kiong.
