KUCHING: Sekolah Kebangsaan (SK) Song Kheng Hai has made history by qualifying, for the very first time, to represent Malaysia in the international-level competition, ASEAN My Cyber Hero 2025, which will take place at the Putrajaya International Convention Centre.

The grand final, scheduled for July 1, will see the school as one of the 10 best teams from Malaysia competing against 10 teams from other ASEAN countries in the Rookie category.

According to SK Song Kheng Hai’s senior administrative assistant Liew Yik Chien, their team qualified for the finals after successfully placing among the top 10 nationwide, out of a total of 3,132 participants.

“We never expected to reach the international stage, especially after being informed that the national-level Rookie Cyber Hero Quiz held last month was extremely competitive and challenging.

“Therefore, securing a spot in the top 10 and advancing to the next stage is a truly proud achievement,” she said.

She added that the team, guided by teacher Lau Ung Hua, is named Firewall Guardians and is represented by three Year 5 pupils, led by Nur Qiesya Yuzrina Mohammad Yuzairul, Ariana Aqisya Mohd Hafizzie and Carlina Kasih Grace.

“This participation not only brings honour to the school’s name but also provides our pupils with the opportunity to gain valuable global experience.

“At the same time, it encourages pupils to engage in the fields of computer science, information and communication technology (ICT), and 21st-century skills,” she said.

Regarding preparations for the challenge, she said the school will strive to do its best in representing the Land of the Hornbills on the international stage.

Apart from SK Song Kheng Hai, three other primary schools from Sarawak have also qualified for the finals, namely two teams from SK St David Bumbok and one from SJKC Chung Hua Krokop.

Meanwhile, SMK Tinggi Sarikei will represent Malaysia in the Star category, after securing a place among the top 10 national teams in the earlier round.

My Cyber Hero 2025 is an annual initiative organised by Microconcept Tech Sdn Bhd and the National Cyber Security Agency, aimed at fostering cyber security awareness among pupils through creative and technology-driven approaches.

It also offers participants the opportunity to explore digital safety issues and express their understanding through the design of innovative and impactful cyber hero characters.

The competition further encourages pupils to develop digital personas capable of tackling challenges such as cyberbullying, online scams and the spread of fake news.

Additionally, it strengthens pupils’ digital literacy, critical thinking, and communication skills in conveying cyber safety messages effectively, in line with efforts to enhance Cyber Safety Education and Digital Literacy in schools.
