KUCHING: Community support plays a crucial role in combating cyber threats, said Sarawak Multimedia Authority (SMA) general manager Datuk Dr Anderson Tiong Ing Heng.

He said in line with this, SMA has introduced the CyberSarawak initiative to educate the public on cyber threats and ensure safe internet usage.

“CyberSarawak comprises three key programmes: Stay Safe, Stay Smart, and Stay Secure.

“Stay Safe focuses on immediate protective measures for individuals and businesses against cyber threats,” he said during the launch of the SMA Cyber Security Awareness Run themed CyberSarawak, held at Padang Merdeka here today (Dec 1).

His speech was read by SMA Head of Digital Technology Division, Hemlet Kiai.

He said the programme includes a help desk to assist victims of cyber threats in reporting incidents, receiving expert guidance, and accessing support resources.

“The second programme, Stay Smart, focuses on raising cyber security awareness, especially within underserved communities, as part of efforts to combat cyber threats,” he added.

To achieve this goal, he said SMA has launched a Train-the-Trainer programme, aimed at training local residents to navigate the Internet safely.

He said SMA has successfully trained 65 local ambassadors from libraries and local authorities across Sarawak.

“The final programme, Stay Secure, assesses and strengthens the cyber security framework for critical information infrastructure (CII), including agencies under the Sarawak Government.

“This proactive approach not only reinforces the cyber security framework but also ensures that essential services remain resilient against potential threats,” he said.

Tiong further shared that SMA has conducted comprehensive assessments on 47 agencies, statutory bodies, and government-linked agencies under this initiative.

“If you encounter cyber threats, please report them via the CyberSarawak website,” he said.

The second edition of the Cyber Security Awareness Run saw 2,000 participants.
