PADAWAN: An account clerk was lured into pouring more than RM622,000 into a bogus online share investment after scammers paid her a small “profit” to earn her trust before disappearing with her life savings.
The incident occurred on June 14 when the 53-year-old woman first came across the investment scheme operating under the name ‘JD Worldwide’.
She then clicked a link to a fake trading platform before downloading an application and registering her personal details.
Padawan Police chief Supt Barry William said the woman initially invested RM1,000 and received RM1,120 in returns two days later, convincing her the scheme was legitimate.
“Believing she had found a profitable investment, she continued transferring increasingly larger sums over the next five weeks.
“Between June 15 and July 23, she carried out 15 online transactions to six different bank accounts, using money from her personal savings.
“Although the application showed her investments generating substantial profits, every attempt to withdraw the funds failed,” he said.
Realising she had been deceived, the victim lodged a police report on Tuesday (Aug 4).
Investigations found the woman had dealt with the scammers through two Japanese-registered phone numbers throughout the investment period.
Barry said the case is being investigated under Section 420 of the Penal Code for cheating and dishonestly inducing the delivery of property.
