SIBU: Sibu Municipal Council (SMC) chairman Clarence Ting Ing Horh has praised Regas EV Auto for launching its BYD showroom in the town.
“I hope that you (Regas EV Auto) will help make the dream of getting more and more EV cars to Sibu a reality.
“Right now, the world’s most successful EV launch is in Norway. They have about 2 million people. This year, their car sales, I just saw, because of defibrillation, are 95 per cent EV.
“On the road in Norway, the majority of cars are still diesel, accounting for 36 per cent. EVs are not far behind at 34 per cent. So, right now, I hope that Malaysia will also move in the same direction,” he said.
He said this in his speech at the launch of the Regas EV Auto’s BYD showroom located at 35, Jalan Lanang, here, Friday (Nov 29).

Ting also encouraged interested parties to install electric vehicle (EV) charging stations at the multi-story car park of Sibu Central Market as part of efforts to develop Sibu into a smart city.
Under the Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) initiative, Ting reiterated SMC’s commitment to transforming Sibu into a smart city in the near future.
“Today, I want to send out a message: if anyone is interested in setting up charging stations at the SMC multi-story car park, come and meet me. I’ll welcome you with open arms.
“Without more charging stations in Sibu, it will be difficult to see an increase in EV users on our roads. I hope Regas can collaborate with us. Show us where, and SMC will facilitate installations at our multi-story car park,” he said.
Ting emphasised the importance of this initiative in addressing the challenge of reducing carbon emissions from internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles.
Currently, there is one EV charging station available at the car park in Wisma Sanyan. However, Ting disclosed that Sarawak Energy Berhad (SEB) plans to install three more charging stations near a bank at Wisma Sanyan.
“We have already approved the project. Today, we are encouraging the installation of EV charging stations in various locations: shopping malls, multi-story car parks, government buildings, hospitals, and many more,” he said.
Also present were Regas Auto’s representative, Principal Dealer Brandon Juan, and BYD Sime Darby Beyond Auto’s representative, Head of Network and Business Development Raymond Chia.
