SIBU: The Sibu Municipal Council (SMC) will act against any illegal signs or signboards in its administrative areas under the provisions of The Local Authorities (Advertisement) By-Laws 2012 starting this May.
SMC General Purpose and Community Services Standing Committee chairperson Donna Petrus Ngelai said they have identified illegal signs and signboards that have been installed on the roadsides by irresponsible parties.
“The signboards were installed at road junctions that can obstruct and disrupt the view, as well as endanger road users,” she said in a statement yesterday (May 1).
She said that under the provisions of the bylaws, SMC can remove and confiscate any illegal signs or signboards that have been installed illegally within its administrative area, and the offenders can also be fined up to RM1,000.
“Therefore, the council appeals to all owners of the signs or signboards installed illegally on the roadsides within SMC’s areas to pull them down to avoid action against them, including paying a penalty,” she added.
