KUCHING: Sarawak’s homegrown semiconductor firm, SMD Semiconductor, is inviting young Sarawakians with a passion for technology and innovation to explore careers in chip design and semiconductor engineering at the upcoming UNIMAS Talent Recruitment and Career Exhibition (TRACE 2025).
The event, taking place on June 17 and 18 at DeTAR, Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (UNIMAS), Kota Samarahan, is expected to attract thousands of jobseekers and students eager to connect with over 80 participating companies.
“SMD is actively seeking Sarawakian talents who are passionate about innovation, problem-solving, and technology, particularly in chip design,” said SMD chief executive officer Shariman Jamil.
“A career in chip design is more than just technical — it’s meaningful. Chip designers help create the technologies that power smartphones, electric vehicles, healthcare devices, and smart homes,” he added.
Shariman highlighted that the semiconductor sector offers long-term job security and attractive career prospects.
“With high global demand, the field promises competitive salaries, career advancement, and the satisfaction of seeing your ideas transformed into real-world products.”
At TRACE 2025, visitors to SMD’s booth will have the opportunity to meet industry professionals, submit their CVs, and explore pathways into the company through internships, career placements, or specialised training via the SMD Academy.
SMD also offers a six-month Semiconductor Mastery Programme in IC design and testing, in collaboration with CENTEXS, Melexis NV, X-Fab Sarawak, and the Ministry of Education, Innovation and Talent Development (MEITD).
Additionally, it works with local universities such as Swinburne Sarawak on postgraduate microelectronics programmes.
SMD’s participation in TRACE 2025 aligns with Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg’s vision to position Sarawak as a leading semiconductor hub by 2030, focusing on local talent development, sustainable innovation, advanced chip packaging, and the creation of high-value jobs in areas like AI, automotive, and chip design.
