KOTA SAMARAHAN: SMD Semiconductor hosted its Hari Raya Aidilfitri open house on Monday (March 30), bringing together ministers, partners and stakeholders to celebrate the festive season while reinforcing Sarawak’s growing semiconductor ambitions.

The gathering at La Promenade Mall was graced by Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hasan, representing Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg.

Also in attendance were Deputy Minister for Energy and Environmental Sustainability Datuk Dr Hazland Abang Hipni.

In a keynote address delivered by Awang Tengah on behalf of the Premier, the state’s top official struck a note of measured urgency, declaring that Sarawak has moved beyond the preparatory phase into one that demands measurable performance and concrete results.

He placed the state’s chip aspirations squarely at the higher end of the global semiconductor value chain, a domain driven by innovation, design capability and advanced technology.

“Growth must be structured, inclusive and resilient. Every initiative must strengthen long-term competitiveness, enhance economic resilience and create high-value opportunities for Sarawakians.”

SMD Semiconductor was identified as the state’s semiconductor delivery platform, tasked with bridging high-level strategy and on-the-ground implementation as Sarawak seeks to compete globally in chip design.

Opening the event, SMD chief executive officer Shariman Jamil highlighted a string of milestones achieved in early 2026.

Shariman framed these achievements within Sarawak’s twin strategic frameworks—the Sarawak Semiconductor Roadmap 2030 and the Post-Covid Development Strategy 2030—describing them as part of “a disciplined effort” in talent development, international partnership and ecosystem building.

The event also celebrated children from Rumah Kanak-Kanak Toh Puan Hajah Norkiah Kuching, with duit raya contribution and mock cheque distribution in cooperation with HSL management.
