KUALA LUMPUR: Sarawak Microelectronics Design (SMD) Semiconductor Sdn Bhd is inviting aspiring engineers, graduates and professionals to be part of the nation’s next generation of chipmakers at the Malaysia Semiconductor Recruitment Day (MSRD) 2025, taking place at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre (KLCC) from October 8 to 11.

At Booth Number 6030, Hall 6, visitors can explore career pathways in chip design, embedded artificial intelligence (AI), and power electronics, and learn how Sarawak is positioning itself as a key player in Malaysia’s growing semiconductor ecosystem.

SMD Semiconductor’s Chairman, Datuk Seri Dr Wan Lizozman Wan Omar, said the company’s mission aligns with Sarawak’s vision to become the ‘Silicon Nerve of Asia’.

“Talent development in semiconductors is not only about building innovation, but also about enabling Sarawakians and Malaysians to play a direct role in driving our nation’s long-term economic growth,” he said.

He added that the company’s journey is driven by the belief that Sarawakians, from youth to engineers and scientists, should have opportunities to contribute to a global industry.

SMD Semiconductor’s Chief Executive Officer, Shariman Jamil, stressed that the company’s focus is on developing Sarawakian talent and ensuring their participation in the semiconductor value chain.

“This is more than recruitment; it’s about opening pathways to global opportunities in a field that underpins everything from smartphones to satellites,” he said.

In its statement, SMD said employees at their company benefit from hands-on experience in integrated circuit (IC) design, structured mentorship, and career development programmes, preparing them to innovate within Sarawak’s technology landscape and beyond.

The company also champions national talent development through its Semiconductor Mastery Programme, a six-month upskilling initiative now managed by the Centre for Technology Excellence Sarawak (CENTEXS), which covers analogue and digital IC design, as well as IC testing solutions.

As Sarawak’s pioneering state-owned fabless chip design house, SMD Semiconductor is among over 30 employers participating in MSRD 2025, offering opportunities ranging from internships to senior engineering positions.

On-the-spot interviews will be held on October 10 and 11, allowing candidates to fast-track their entry into Malaysia’s most dynamic tech sector.

The event runs in conjunction with the Selangor Smart City and Digital Economy Convention (SDEC) 2025, featuring over 500 job openings across Malaysia’s semiconductor industry.

Meanwhile, the Advanced Semiconductor Academy of Malaysia (ASEM) and the Malaysia Semiconductor IC Design Park, established under the SIDEC MSRD 2025 initiative, serve as strategic national platforms to cultivate high-quality semiconductor talent.

These initiatives facilitate strong industry-academia linkages by connecting top local professionals with leading employers in the semiconductor sector.
