SMK Baleh leads AI use in rural education

KAPIT: Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan (SMK) Baleh has emerged as one of the pioneering educational institutions in expanding the use of artificial intelligence (AI) to support teaching and learning in rural areas.

Deputy Minister of Digital Datuk Wilson Ugak Kumbong said technological proficiency and digital literacy must be strengthened to ensure students are equipped to face future changes and challenges.

He said technology, particularly AI, should be effectively utilised as a learning medium to enhance students’ capabilities and potential.

“Technology needs to be effectively utilised as a learning medium to enhance students’ capabilities,” he said in his speech at the SMK Baleh Digital Community Outreach Programme 2026 held here yesterday (Aug 18).

The programme also saw the launch of the Prime AI Pilot Project, as well as the provision of an Online Learning Platform and Smart TVs to support the implementation of digital education at the school.

Meanwhile, laptops were presented to 40 students from eight primary schools, while teachers from six secondary schools in Kapit Division received AI Tools-Qwenwork from Alibaba Cloud.

SMK Baleh also received a contribution of RM200,000, while the school’s Parent-Teacher Association (PTA) received RM20,000 to support the development and strengthening of education.

Meanwhile, SMK Baleh principal Stanley Bayang said the programme provided the school community with exposure to the use of digital technology and AI in education.

He said the school was ready to collaborate in expanding the use of digital technology not only among nearby schools but also within the local community.
