BELAWAI: Sports facilities at SMK Belawai have been significantly enhanced following the early completion of an upgrade project under the Tanjong Manis Parliamentary People-Friendly Project (PMR).
The project, valued at RM200,000 for 2025, involved the construction of one futsal court, two sepak takraw courts, and one netball court.
It was initially scheduled for completion in June 2026.
The handover ceremony of the completed project from the Public Works Department (PWD) to the Education Department was witnessed by Tanjong Manis Member of Parliament, Datuk Yusuf Abdul Wahab, who is also the Chairman of the Construction Industry Development Board (CIDB), on Tuesday.
According to him, the early completion of the project demonstrates ongoing commitment to strengthening educational infrastructure development, particularly in rural areas.
“This project was supposed to be completed in June, but it was successfully finished earlier in April with satisfactory results, involving four sports courts for students’ use,” he said.
He added that the facilities are much needed due to the increasing interest and participation of students in sports, which could help nurture athletes capable of representing the school at higher levels.
Previously, sports facilities at SMK Belawai were reported to be in poor condition and inadequately maintained due to budget constraints.
As such, the upgrade effort is seen as a proactive step to boost co-curricular activities and provide a more conducive environment for students’ talent development.
Yusuf also expressed his satisfaction with the project’s success and hopes that the facilities will be fully utilised and well-maintained by the school community.
