SIBU: SMK Chung Hua will commemorate its 110th anniversary with a series of events beginning on Aug 29, while appealing to alumni and the public to support fundraising efforts aimed at upgrading facilities at its kindergarten, primary and secondary schools.
The school Alumni Association chairman and school board member Datuk Teo Boon Siew said preparations for the celebration were progressing smoothly following a coordination meeting to finalise the planned programmes.
Speaking at a press conference on Monday (July 6), he said the celebrations will begin with a Charity Sale and Homecoming Day on Aug 29. Jointly organised by the Parent-Teacher Association (PIBG), the alumni association and the school, the event will be held from 7am to 12.30pm.
The second programme will be the Sarawak Veteran Group Singing Competition on Sept 5, coordinated by Alumni Association vice-chairman Lim Ee Soon.
This will be followed by a Fun Run on Sept 19, organised by alumnus Hii Hsien Chao. The event is open to primary and secondary school students as well as members of the public.
Teo said on Oct 3, SJK Chung Hua and Chung Hua Kindergarten will hold a charity sale at the school hall from 7am to 12pm.
The celebrations will conclude with a Gala Dinner at the Kingwood Hotel on Oct 10, with organisers targeting 208 tables. It is expected to be the largest event in the school’s anniversary programme.
“The dinner is also expected to be attended by Tourism, Arts and Culture Minister Datuk Seri Tiong King Sing as the guest of honour.
“To commemorate the milestone, we have also prepared a special 20-page publication, with Lim Liew Ching serving as editor-in-chief.”
Teo said all proceeds raised from the anniversary celebrations would be channelled towards upgrading the infrastructure and facilities at Chung Hua Kindergarten, Chung Hua Primary School and Chung Hua National Secondary School.
“After 110 years, many of the school’s buildings and facilities have aged and require repairs and upgrading.
“We hope alumni, benefactors and members of the public will continue to support this initiative so that we can provide a better learning environment for future generations.”
