KANOWIT: The RM49.9 million construction project replacing 18 classrooms and upgrading facilities at SMK Kanowit has been completed two months ahead of schedule.
Works Minister Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi said the timely completion highlights the efficiency of the Public Works Department (PWD) and the strong collaboration between government agencies and the local community.

“The successful completion demonstrates PWD’s ability to execute projects in an organised manner, meet deadlines, and adhere to established standards. It also reflects the effectiveness of cooperation between the government, implementing agencies, and the community,” he said during the project handover ceremony here yesterday (Dec 6).
The upgraded school now boasts a new administration block, an academic block with 18 classrooms, a surau, a Design and Technology (RBT) workshop, a computer lab, an integrated science lab, a chemistry lab, and two resource rooms.
Additional facilities include two sports courts, waiting sheds, bicycle shelters, a security guard post, and essential support amenities such as a pump room and a fire station.
“This development benefits the entire school community and aligns with the government’s goal of providing a safe, conducive, and modern learning ecosystem,” Nanta added.
During the ceremony, he also presented RM20,000 to the SMK Kanowit Parent-Teacher Association (PIBG) to support school programmes and activities.
