KUCHING: Despite its remote location, 197 kilometres from Miri city, Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan (SMK) Long Bedian in Baram has proven that distance is no obstacle to academic excellence, emerging as one of the schools in Sarawak that achieved outstanding results in the 2024 Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) examination.

Minister for Education, Innovation and Talent Development, Datuk Seri Roland Sagah Wee Inn, expressed his pride and appreciation for the school’s efforts, saying that the success reflects the strong collaboration and unwavering commitment of students, teachers, and parents alike.

“I am truly grateful and proud to announce that SMK Long Bedian has recorded a 100 per cent qualification rate for the SPM certificate this year. This is a significant achievement for a rural school, and I hope this positive momentum will continue in the years to come,” he said during a press conference held at The Waterfront Hotel today to announce the state’s SPM 2024 results.

He added that the school’s success stands as a testament to the effectiveness of support systems and educational programmes being implemented even in the interior regions of Sarawak, ensuring that students from all backgrounds are given equal opportunities to succeed.

Adding a sweeter note to the celebration, one of SMK Long Bedian’s students, Wilfred Anyi Wellis, achieved straight A’s in all the subjects he sat for.

His accomplishment not only brings pride to the school but also serves as an inspiration for other students, especially those in rural areas, proving that with determination and the right support, academic excellence is attainable regardless of geography.

SMK Long Bedian’s achievement adds to the encouraging overall performance of Sarawak in SPM 2024, where the state recorded its best Average Grade Point (GPN) since 2013.
