MIRI: The SMK Merbau’s rugby field roared to life as 324 Form One students took part in the school’s annual ‘Get into Rugby’ programme last Wednesday.

The grassroots initiative, organised in collaboration with the Miri District Rugby Association (MDRA), introduced 182 boys and 142 girls to the sport through drills, mini-games, and mentorship sessions led by experienced coaches.

Rugby, often perceived as intense and dangerous, proved through this year’s programme that with proper technique, guidance and spirit, it can be both safe and transformative.

Sarawak Women’s head coach, Sylvia Alexander Lian, said the programme goes beyond sport by instilling values of character, discipline and inclusion.

“We’re especially proud to see more girls stepping onto the field. Our vision moving forward is clear: we want to expand women’s rugby development across the state.

“SMK Merbau is showing us that it’s possible,” she said in a statement issued by MDRA today.

She emphasised that the collaboration between MDRA and schools like SMK Merbau is key to building a sustainable pipeline for female athletes.

“We’re not just training players, we’re shaping leaders. The girls here are fearless, and they deserve every opportunity to grow in this sport,” she said.

Programme coordinator and long-time advocate for rugby development Cikgu Akmal, said rugby is often perceived as rough and dangerous.

“Once our students joined ‘Get into Rugby’ , they realised it’s not about brute force, it’s about technique, teamwork and trust.

“Many of them, especially the girls, were surprised by how much they enjoyed it,” he said.

He added that SMK Merbau has consistently produced players who go on to represent Sarawak and Malaysia.

“This programme is the foundation, where the journey begins. With growing support from MDRA and the Sarawak rugby community, ‘Get into Rugby’ at SMK Merbau is not just a school programme; it’s a movement.

“One that promises to elevate youth engagement, challenge gender norms, and build a legacy of excellence on and off the field,” he added.
