KUCHING: Thirty-one individuals were caught flouting smoking laws at eateries around the city during a surprise enforcement operation earlier this week.

The Kuching Divisional Health Office (PKB) said the operation, held on Tuesday (July 29), zeroed in on hangout spots in Tabuan Tranquility, One TJ, Aeroville, Kuching Sentral, and King Centre.

They all fall under designated smoke-free zones enforced under the Control of Smoking Products for Public Health Act 2024 (Act 852).

During the operation, 17 assistant environmental health officers, supported by 11 staff members, issued a total of 31 court summonses for the offence of smoking at eateries.

“Kuching PKB will conduct similar operations across Kuching city, which now has 28 designated non-smoking and non-vaping zones under Act 852.

“Enforcement is the last resort to ensure public compliance with the law,” the office said.

Such action is crucial to curb harmful habits and prevent health risks among the community.

Members of the public are urged to adopt healthy lifestyles and help maintain clean and safe surroundings for all.
