A 10-second video captured by a passenger, showing the snake slithering in the overhead compartment.

KUCHING: A commercial plane was forced to make an emergency landing at Kuching International Airport (KIA) yesterday night after a slithering snake was spotted in the overhead compartment.

A video of the reptile’s silhouette taken by a passenger, had since gone viral on various social media platforms.

AirAsia chief safety officer Captain Ling Liong Tien in a statement, said they were aware of the incident where the plane was headed to Tawau, Sabah from Kuala Lumpur.

Once the pilot realised, he decided to divert the aircraft to KIA as a precautionary measure to cleanse the aircraft.

“This is a very rare occurrence and it can happen on any aircraft from time to time.

“The captain (pilot) took appropriate action and the flight departed for Tawau as soon as possible,” he said, adding that no passengers were hurt.

However, the condition of the snake was not disclosed.
