KUCHING: PRS Youth Chief Datuk Snowdan Lawan has expressed his strong support for the Premier of Sarawak’s proposal to offer scholarships for Sarawakian youth to pursue military studies at the prestigious Royal Military Academy Sandhurst in the United Kingdom.
In a statement today, Snowdan, who is also Deputy Minister for Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts Sarawak, described the idea as fantastic, realistic and well within Sarawak’s capabilities.
“This practical proposal reflects our growing need to develop well-trained local talents in security and leadership.
“We must equip our youth not only with knowledge in military and policing theory, but also with skills relevant to tackling modern-day challenges such as commercial crime, surveillance and cyber threats,” he said.
He was responding to Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg’s announcement during the Sarawak Security and Enforcement Unit (UPKS) eighth anniversary dinner earlier this week, where the Premier said the state may offer such scholarships to eligible and determined Sarawakian youth.
Snowdan also voiced support for Federal Works Minister and Kapit Member of Parliament Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi’s call to revive the historic Sarawak Rangers.
“The spirit of bravery that once defined the Sarawak Rangers has not disappeared, especially among its surviving members.
“While the idea is still being floated, it is only right that it be revived sooner rather than later,” he said.
He said re-establishing the Sarawak Rangers as a dedicated security corps would complement the existing Malaysian Armed Forces, particularly in inland and border areas.
“Given our vast physical landscape and scattered population, there is a growing demand for enhanced security not just on land and sea, but also in the cyber realm,” he added.
Snowdan pointed out that the state already has essential infrastructure in place, such as the Sarawak Coast Guard and UPKS, and the next step should focus on personnel and leadership development.
“Within our diverse populace, we are never short of talent. Glory should be our next destination and Sandhurst is the journey,” he said.
