KUCHING: Parti Rakyat Sarawak (PRS) Youth chief Datuk Snowdan Lawan has confirmed his withdrawal from contesting the party’s deputy president post ahead of the upcoming PRS Triennial Delegates Conference (TDC) on Oct 18 and 19.

He said the decision was made after consultations with supporters and senior leaders, noting that party unity must take precedence over personal ambition.

“After due consideration, I have humbly decided to pull out and withdraw from the contest, thereby giving way to the incumbent Datuk Majang Renggi.

“This decision has not been very easy for me. But what matters most is the unity of the party, which must always prevail,” he said in a press conference today (Oct 14).

Snowdan said PRS was built on a strong foundation 21 years ago and should not be weakened by internal disunity.

He also expressed gratitude to the divisions and members who nominated and supported him earlier, saying his withdrawal was to avoid friction and safeguard party interests.

“The party is above all of us. I don’t want to see the party split, disunited, divided or disintegrate,” he asserted.

Snowdan added that Sarawak’s rapid development and the coming state election required PRS to remain stable and focused without internal squabbles.

“It is crucial that Gabungan Parti Sarawak’s (GPS) strength is not jeopardised by any potential squabbles within its component parties, particularly PRS.

“I foresee the real challenge will be in 2026, when 17 new state seats are at stake. Let us be hopeful and a winnable participant for GPS in the next state election.

“Therefore, I hope the party will remain stable, continue to prosper and, above all, keep our unity intact,” he said.

Previously, Snowdan had announced his intention to contest the deputy president’s post at the TDC, which will take place on Oct 18 and 19.

He said at the time that the decision came after extensive discussions and feedback from various quarters.

This year’s TDC is expected to see keen contests with the entry of new faces, as all posts in the party are open for challenge, as confirmed by PRS president Datuk Joseph Salang Gandum in April.
