A total of 4,694 students has benefited from Sarawak’s Free Tertiary Education Scheme (FTES) since its implementation this year.

Deputy Minister for Education, Innovation and Talent Development Datuk Dr Annuar Rapaee said the initiative, introduced by the Sarawak government, aims to expand access to higher education opportunities through institutions owned by the state government across Sarawak.

“As of March 31 this year, a total of 4,694 students has received benefits under the scheme,” he said.

He said this when responding to Daro assemblymen Safiee Ahmad during the Q&A session at the Sarawak Legislative Assembly (DUN) sitting today.

Dr Annuar said the highest number of beneficiaries was recorded at University of Technology Sarawak, involving 2,020 students enrolled under the scheme this year.

Meanwhile, Swinburne University of Technology Sarawak Campus recorded 1,959 students receiving assistance through the initiative introduced to strengthen Sarawak’s future skilled workforce.

In addition, 543 students from Curtin University Malaysia have benefited from the scheme, while 172 students were enrolled through i-CATS University College.

“Sarawak’s FTES initiative reflects the state government’s continued commitment towards strengthening talent development, improving educational accessibility, and supporting long-term economic growth through higher education opportunities,” he added.
