Solution in sight for landslide-affected residents, says SMC

SIBU: The Sibu Municipal Council (SMC) is committed to ensuring an effective solution to restore the safety of residents affected by the landslide at Rantau Panjang Jaya 7. 

According to its deputy chairman Mohammed Abdullah Izkandar Roseley, SMC held a meeting yesterday (Feb 26) to gather feedback and an estimated budget from relevant agencies for immediate rectification work in the area.

“The landslide caused a road collapse in front of a residential property on Feb 4,” he said in a Facebook post. 

He said the meeting, chaired by SMC chairman Clarence Ting, included Public Works Department (PWD) Sibu divisional engineer Chieng Song Ming, Department of Irrigation and Drainage (DID) Sibu divisional engineer Rudi Abang Zamhari, SMC municipal secretary Yong Ing Chu, SMC municipal engineer Tony Wong and SMC Works & Traffic Committee vice chairman Rory Ee-Yion Wong.

“Also attending the meeting were engineering department representatives, the consultant who endorsed the initial design, and the developer responsible for the retaining wall construction,” he said.

On Feb 4, residents of Lorong Rantau Panjang Jaya in Teku were caught off guard by a landslide that struck just a few meters from their homes at 10.30 pm. 

However, no casualties were reported. 

The incident also caught the attention of several representatives in the area, including Nangka Assemblyman Datuk Dr Annuar Rapaee and Sibu MP Oscar Ling, prompting them to provide aid to the affected residents.
