KUCHING: Malaysia’s mixed doubles pair, Goh Soon Huat and Shevon Jemie Lai, have moved into the quarter-finals of the 2025 Badminton Asia Championships after dispatching Thailand’s Dechapol Puavaranukroh and Supissara Paewsampran in a straight set on Thursday.

Their 21-17, 21-14 win was wrapped up in under 40 minutes at the Ningbo Olympic Sports Centre. It was a controlled performance from the Malaysian duo, who dictated tempo and stayed sharp at the net throughout.

This result adds weight to their recent run of form. Ranked among the top three in the world, Soon Huat and Shevon have been solid in their continental campaign, and their progress in Ningbo reflects a growing confidence with every round.

However, compatriots Valeree Siow and Yap Roy King were less fortunate after conceding defeat to Japan’s Hiroki Midorikawa and Natsu Saito over a 6-21,16-21 set loss.

The married pair now turn their attention to the quarter-final tie on Friday against Indonesian pair, Jafar Hidayatullah and Felisha Pasaribu, where sterner tests await. But with their rhythm intact and teamwork evidently tight, expectations are rising.

Meanwhile in the men’s singles bout, sole survivor Justin Hoh bowed down to Indonesia’s Jonatan Christie in a 13-21, 19-21 set loss.

Meeting the same fate in the women’s singles category, Goh Jin Wei bailed out from BAC after a 15-21,16-21 set loss against Thailand’s Supanida Katethong.
