KUCHING: The presence of the Spanish National Open Water Swim Team in Sarawak has highlighted the urgent need for investment in science-backed athletic preparation.
Power Aquatics Swimming Club’s (PASC’s) adviser, Voon Yong Hui, who observed the Spanish team’s sessions during their stay here, said he was struck by the professionalism and detail-oriented approach displayed by the visiting contingent.
“I was impressed by their seriousness in preparation for competition.
“With just three swimmers, they brought along five officials: a team manager, coach, strength trainer, physiotherapist, and a doctor,” he told Sarawak Tribune today.
Voon praised the team’s use of daily monitoring tools and performance tracking, noting that every athlete was checked and tested to ensure optimal condition heading into competition.
“They are very professional and systematic. Sports today are not just about hard training; it requires technology, structure and data,” he said.
He added that the Spanish team’s presence also offered valuable exposure for local coaches and athletes.
“We need to have more of these international exposures to truly understand what it takes to compete at the highest level,” Voon said.
The Spanish National Open Water Swim Team held their final training camp in Kuching before heading to Singapore for the World Aquatics Championships 2025, where the open water events will take place from July 15 to 20.
PASC, in a Facebook post, wished the team all the best as they “dive into competition mode”, describing their visit as a meaningful learning opportunity for the local swimming community.
