KUCHING: The first part of the Special TYT Documentary featuring Tun Pehin Sri Dr Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar, Sarawak’s current Head of State, aired recently on TVS and has received widespread praise from viewers across the state.

Many Sarawakians commended the documentary’s powerful and respectful portrayal of his lifelong dedication to public service, as well as the personal principles that have long guided his leadership.

The programme offered fresh and meaningful insights into his journey, from humble, grassroots beginnings to becoming the state’s highest constitutional figure, shedding light on the man behind the title.

To gauge public sentiment, Sarawak Tribune spoke to several members of the public, who shared how the documentary resonated with them.

Angelinatasia Geranang

For 27-year-old make-up artist, Angelinatasia Geranang, the documentary was both enlightening and emotionally impactful.

“It offered a comprehensive look into the life and service of Wan Junaidi, not just the political milestones, but also the values, discipline, and humility that shaped his leadership,” she said.

Angelinatasia added that the documentary deepened her appreciation for Wan Junaidi, particularly for the many behind-the-scenes contributions he has made throughout his career.

“It gave me a new level of respect for his role, which is often seen as symbolic or ceremonial, but clearly carries great cultural and moral weight.

“The part that stood out most to me was the segment showing his engagement with rural communities and his deep commitment to preserving Sarawak’s diverse cultural heritage.

“It was heartening to see that even as Head of State, he remains closely connected to the people and traditions of the land. That kind of leadership is rare and deeply meaningful,” she added.

Darren Sagau Ayuu

Meanwhile, Darren Sagau Ayuu, a 30-year-old mechanic, shared similar sentiments, describing the documentary as thoughtful and well-crafted.

“It gave a well-rounded view of Wan Junaidi’s life before taking on the role of Head of State, and how his experiences helped shape his vision for Sarawak,” he said.

Darren noted that the documentary helped him see Wan Junaidi in a new light, not just as a ceremonial figure, but as someone who has played an active role in promoting unity, cultural preservation, and good governance.

“I now have a better understanding of the balance he maintains between tradition and progress in Sarawak,” he added.

The part that left the biggest impression on Darren was the segment that focused on Wan Junaidi’s outreach efforts.

“It really highlighted how approachable and grounded he is, even while holding such a high office.

“That humility and people-first mindset truly stood out to me,” he said.

Meanwhile, the Chairman of Kelab Belia Proaktif Lubuk Bukut, Dr Jawing Chunggat, aged 38, felt that the documentary was a good testimony by people who are closest to him and those who know him best, back to when he was a small boy to the present time.

“It was a good portrayal of what a great character he is and how lucky we are to have him as a leader,” he said,

Dr Jawing Chunggat

Jawing also said that it gave him a picture of what a kind and generous leader Wan Junaidi is.

“Someone who is truly benevolent and prioritises the needs of people around him, especially his family, friends, colleagues and the rakyat without asking for anything in return,” he added.

There were three things that stood out to Jawing from the documentary: firstly, Wan Junaidi’s dedication and commitment to ensuring that people around him get as much assistance that he can provide.

“He is a man with a big heart that truly serves the people and ensures that everyone prospers together.

“Secondly, his humility was obvious. Even as a parliamentarian and later as the TYT, he still makes time to mingle with the common folk.

“He is friendly and down to earth, which makes him very likeable and approachable,” he said.

Jawing also admired that Wan Junaidi is a brilliant person and has a good memory.

“He is very well-read and smart, which makes him a great mentor and leader.

“He also can recall events from decades earlier and can even remember the names of all his childhood friends,” he said.
