Special English training for 3,000 teachers

SRI AMAN: Education, Science and Technological Research Minister Datuk Seri Michael Manyin Jawong reiterated yesterday that 3000 teachers would be trained to use the English language in the classroom.

“When visiting Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg recently, Education Minister Dr Maszlee Malik said that Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad had proposed that Sarawak be the first state to implement the teaching of Mathematics and Science in English for primary schools in the state.

“Yes, we are very happy, and we are ready to implement this but, we need to send 3000 teachers for training so that they can teach the subjects in the English language,” added Manyin in his speech at the state-level Teacher’s Day celebration here yesterday.

He explained that if the state government started implementing the use of the English language in the teaching of Science and Mathematics in primary schools, by the time they entered secondary schools, the students would be fluent in English.

The minister advised the students to look for their hidden talents and skills which they could use in future besides getting their paper qualification in school.

Meanwhile, State Education Department director Dr Azhar Ahmad thanked the state government for prioritising education.

“Thank you to our Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg for always taking care of education and making sure that the students and teachers are comfortable during the learning process, he said.

“To help Sarawak achieve the goal of being a role model state in 2030, we, teachers, need to be more productive.  We must not stop learning, too,” he added.

At the event, two former teachers received the “Anugerah Tokoh Kepimpinan Dan Tokoh Guru Peringkat Pendidikan Negeri Sarawak” award.
