SIMUNJAN: Sarawak will introduce the Standardised Examination (Special Examination) for Year Six students starting next year.

Deputy Minister of Education, Innovation, and Talent Development Datuk Dr Annuar Rapaee said the federal Ministry of Education (MoE) has approved the implementation of this initiative.

“Sarawak will conduct the Standardised Examination for all Year Six students beginning in 2025, covering Mathematics, English, and Science subjects.

“The MoE has given us the green light to carry out this examination, which is not intended to place pressure on students but rather to measure their progress in learning,” he said.

He said this after officiating at the closing of the Career and Education Day for the Simunjan District Education Office (PPD) at Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Simunjan No. 1 yesterday (Nov 26).

He was responding to questions regarding the MoE’s recent decision to eliminate examination-oriented learning, a move aimed at reducing stress among students.

During a Dewan Rakyat session, Education Minister Fadhlina Sidek said the ministry had adopted a holistic approach focusing on inquiry-based, exploratory, and experiential learning.

She said classroom assessments would serve as a more comprehensive benchmark to evaluate students across various dimensions, including academics, physical activities, sports, co-curricular involvement, psychometric aspects, and individual tendencies.

In his speech, Dr Annuar also announced that the Sarawak government had allocated RM20 million for the Sarawak Education Enhancement Programme (SEEP) in 2025.

“The Sarawak government has approved RM20 million for SEEP, with two key objectives. First, to increase the number of students entering the workforce by ensuring a steady supply of skilled workers. Initially targeted at Form 5 students, the programme will now include Form 3 and 4 students.

“Second, to provide free university education for more students. This initiative aims to ensure that free education benefits not only those in urban areas but also students in rural communities,” he added.
