KUCHING: The Creative Sewing Special Certificate Unit of Kolej Komuniti Kuching (KKKG) has taken proactive steps to strengthen soft skills among special needs students through its Daily Independence and Communication Programme held at India Street here today.

The programme, involving Semester Three students, aimed to enhance effective interaction and communication techniques with suppliers while cultivating the ability to independently manage the procurement of sewing materials.

Under the initiative, students were given full responsibility to deal directly with suppliers to select and purchase fabrics and sewing tools from business premises for the production of their final products.

Programme head, Gracienthy Goen, said the activity was not merely a practical exercise but also formed part of the assessment rubric for the semester course, which requires students to demonstrate the ability to calculate costs for each item purchased.

“This initiative is important in building independence and self-reliance among special needs students as early preparation before they enter the increasingly challenging job market,” she said.

She added that through close supervision by lecturers, students were guided to become more confident in making decisions and to better understand the fundamentals of buying and selling, which are core elements in the creative sewing industry.

The programme, which began as early as 8 am, also received strong cooperation from traders at India Street, who provided a supportive environment for students to practise their communication skills in a professional setting.
