KUCHING: The Sarawak Biodiversity Centre (SBC) will be hosting a special talk titled “Sarawak Biodiversity Insights: featuring The Habitat & Advantages of Spiders in Tropical Rainforests by Bruce Teo” on September 19, 2025.
The session will be delivered by Bruce Teo, founder of Bruce Wildlife Nature & Adventure, who is well known as a passionate nature guide, educator, and chronicler of Sarawak’s biodiversity. His ability to combine wildlife exploration with compelling photography has made him a popular figure in promoting environmental awareness.
“This upcoming talk reflects the centre’s commitment to creating public awareness of Sarawak’s unique natural heritage,” it said in a press statement yesterday (Sept 12).
“By offering platforms that highlight the ecological importance of often-overlooked species such as spiders, we aim to broaden understanding of rainforest ecosystems and the roles these species play in maintaining balance,” it added.
During the event, Bruce will explain how spiders act as vital ecosystem engineers in tropical rainforests. Their role in regulating insect populations, supporting nutrient cycles, and sustaining the food web contributes significantly to the health of these ecosystems.
Drawing on his own field photography and experiences navigating Sarawak’s night forests, Bruce will provide participants with a vivid look at spider habitats, hunting behaviours, and their broader ecological value.
The talk also aligns with Sarawak’s ongoing biodiversity conservation initiatives, particularly in its tropical rainforest ecosystems, which are among the most biologically rich in the world.
“Bruce’s documentation of species such as spiders supports the state’s mission of conserving biodiversity while raising public awareness about the delicate balance between conservation and sustainable development,” it said.
The event will take place at the IBRB Seminar Room, Sarawak Biodiversity Centre, starting at 10 am. Admission is free, but seats are limited to 80 participants. Registration can be made at https://qrco.de/bfbhmk.
Those unable to attend in person can join virtually through Zoom by registering at https://qrco.de/SBCTALK, or follow the live stream via SBC’s official Facebook page at www.facebook.com/sarawak.biodiversity.centre.
