SIBU: Deputy Minister of Public Health, Housing and Local Government, Datuk Michael Tiang Ming Tee has called on parents to spend more quality time with their children in today’s increasingly challenging digital world.

He said that technological developments and the hustle and bustle of work had caused the relationship between parents and children to become increasingly distant, which could have a negative impact on family well-being.

“In this digital era, many parents are too busy working for the family to spend less time with their children. Children are more dependent on digital devices, the internet and social media. This situation can cause relationships to become tense and sometimes lead to tragedy,” he said when met by reporters during the Mid-Autumn Festival Celebration event organised by the Sarawak United People’s Party (SUPP) Pelawan Service Centre at Heng Hua Memorial Park here on Friday night.

Tiang delivers his speech.

According to Tiang, who is also Pelawan Assembyman, although the celebration had passed, the event was held to provide an opportunity for parents and children to gather and enjoy time together.

“The Mid-Autumn Festival symbolises family unity and togetherness. Just like the full moon, it reminds us of the importance of families coming together and appreciating the moments of togetherness,” he explained.

He also stressed that nothing could replace the direct interaction between parents and children through such activities.

“We want to create a space for them to have fun, take photos, record videos and enjoy beautiful times together. Moments like this are very precious and cannot be replaced by technology,” he added.
